Enjoy, and here&#8217;s to expanding our own reading horizons and teaching our children to actively read and think for themselves!<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 8px;\">&nbsp;First, I have to thank the good folks at <a href=\"http:\/\/firstsecondbooks.typepad.com\/mainblog\/\">First Second<\/a> for the fabulous animated GIF over there, featuring characters from one of their upcoming graphic novels, <i>Americus<\/i>&#8211;&#8220;about Neil Barton, a teenager growing up in Oklahoma, and his fight to keep his favorite fantasy series, <i>The Chronicles of Apathea Ravenchilde<\/i>, in his public library.&#8221; I&#8217;m already looking forward to it&#8211;check out the webcomic version <a href=\"http:\/\/saveapathea.com\/\">here<\/a>.\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 8px;\">Via NPR comes an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/templates\/story\/story.php?storyId=130266322\">interactive Google map<\/a> of every location in the country where books have been banned. <\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 8px;\">Via Leila at <a href=\"http:\/\/bookshelvesofdoom.blogs.com\/bookshelves_of_doom\/2010\/09\/hunger-games-challenged.html\">Bookshelves of Doom<\/a> comes the news that&#8211;during Banned Books Week, no less&#8211;<i>The Hunger Games<\/i> was challenged.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 8px;\">Children&#8217;s author Lucy Coats, at her blog <a href=\"http:\/\/scribblecitycentral.blogspot.com\/2010\/09\/cant-you-hear-me-then-ill-speak-louder.html\">Scribble City Central<\/a>, discusses the challenge to Laurie Halse Anderson&#8217;s <i>Speak<\/i> and relates her own feelings with heartfelt and wrenching honesty. In a <a href=\"http:\/\/scribblecitycentral.blogspot.com\/2010\/09\/roses-from-dark-places-banned-books.html\">follow-up post<\/a>, she discusses the amazing reaction to her initial post, and shares a striking poem about book banning by Ellen Hopkins.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 8px;\">Cybils YA panelist Ami Jones, of Three Turtles and Their Pet Librarian, discusses their library&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/3tnar.blogspot.com\/2010\/10\/and-tango-makesa-really-cute-costume.html\">Banned Books Gala<\/a> (something I dearly wish our library could have had!), the <a href=\"http:\/\/3tnar.blogspot.com\/2010\/09\/hunger-games-challenged.html\">challenge to <i>Hunger Games<\/i><\/a>, and more.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 8px;\">Guys Lit Wire contributors post <a href=\"http:\/\/guyslitwire.blogspot.com\/2010\/09\/banned-books-week-2010-read-these-books.html\">recommendations<\/a> of some of their favorite banned books.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 8px;\">Author <a href=\"http:\/\/cherylrainfield.com\/blog\/index.php\/2010\/09\/26\/banned-book-week-speak-up-and-pick-up-a-good-book\/\">Cheryl Rainfield<\/a> discusses banned books in the wake of various recent challenges to YA books and authors, and relates a wealth of links on the topic.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 8px;\">Angela Pe\u00f1a Dahle of A Pen in Neverland&#8211;a brand-new-to-me blog&#8211;fun!&#8211;discusses her feelings about book banning and invites your comments on her <a href=\"http:\/\/a-pen-in-neverland.blogspot.com\/2010\/09\/think-for-yourself-banned-books.html\">Workshop Wednesday<\/a> feature (how neat is that??). <\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 8px;\">The redoubtable Ms. Camille of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bookmoot.com\/\">BookMoot<\/a> is quoted in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.time.com\/time\/nation\/article\/0,8599,2022356,00.html\">TIME magazine article<\/a> about the Ellen Hopkins-disinvited-from-Humble-Teen-Lit-Fest incident. <\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 8px;\">Alex at <a href=\"http:\/\/thechildrenswar.blogspot.com\/2010\/09\/summer-of-my-german-soldier-by-bette.html\">The Children&#8217;s War<\/a> (another blog that&#8217;s new to me) discusses the classic <i>Summer of My German Soldier<\/i> in admirable depth, and I learned that this is one of three WWII-themed books for children that have been banned (both recently and repeatedly).<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 8px;\">Ellen Hopkins&#8217; excellent anti-censorship <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/ellen-hopkins\/banned-books-anticensorship-manifesto_b_744219.html\">manifesto<\/a> for the Huffington Post includes her poem referenced above, her story about the Humble Teen List Fest, and more.<\/li>\n<li style=\"margin-bottom: 8px;\">Sheryl McFarlane, on her Book Blog, talks about some of the more <a href=\"http:\/\/readingkidsbooks.blogspot.com\/2010\/09\/reasons-for-banning-books-can-sometimes.html\">laughter-inducing reasons<\/a> for book banning, as well as linking to an excellent <a href=\"http:\/\/readingkidsbooks.blogspot.com\/2010\/09\/banned-book-quiz-banner.html\">Banned Books quiz and banner<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All I can say is, our kidlitosphere is amazing when it comes to these things.
