{"id":1589,"date":"2009-06-11T10:37:00","date_gmt":"2009-06-11T10:37:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/writingya.com\/?p=1589"},"modified":"2018-11-20T05:31:08","modified_gmt":"2018-11-20T05:31:08","slug":"drama-and-books-and-suc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/writingya.com\/?p=1589","title":{"rendered":"Drama and Books and Such"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/wishiwerebaking\/3613680539\/in\/set-72157619345592141\/\" target=_blank title=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" hspace=\"10\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3564\/3613680539_9994eefbff_m.jpg?v=0\" align=\"left\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i>&#8220;Teenagers have historically shown a certain appetite for calamity; they like a little madness, sadism and disease in the books they curl up with at night.&#8221;<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Wall Street Journal article about <a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB10001424052970203771904574173403357573642.html#mod\"target= _blank>YA lit<\/a> tries to be positive about the dystopian and\/or what they see as darker YA books, making special notes of <i>13 Reasons Why<\/i> and <i>Wintergirls<\/i> as examples of particularly depressing fiction that may seem, to uninformed adults perusing the copies, &#8220;fairly uncommon and overwrought.&#8221; I&#8217;m glad to say that the writer does sound quite a bit more informed than many who write about YA lit (although to blame all dark books on L.H. Anderson, as the &#8220;doyenne&#8221; of such &#8212; eh?), however, despite the popularity of <i>The Hunger Games<\/i> and <i>If I Stay<\/i>, the overarching theme of YA lit as &#8220;dark&#8221; is obviously a matter of &#8230;opinion. Or maybe I just like &#8220;dark?&#8221; Anyway, obviously not all YA books embraced now are depressing &#8212; or bleakly mindless. There <i>are<\/i> plenty of other options, which is why I&#8217;m glad that Colleen is looking at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chasingray.com\/archives\/2009\/06\/what_a_girl_wants_introduction.html\" target= _blank><i>What A Girl Wants<\/i><\/a>. Depression and snark aren&#8217;t the only things teen girl readers look for, is it? <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chasingray.com\/archives\/2009\/06\/what_a_girl_wants_introduction.html\" target= _blank>These writers say no<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And speaking of Katniss &#8212; casting calls are going to be going out soon for <i>The Hunger Games<\/i> movie. Mitali has an intriguing question about&#8230; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mitaliblog.com\/2009\/06\/race-in-suzanne-collins-hunger-games.html\" target= _blank>what the characters look like<\/a>. Check out her 12-second-tv spot.<\/p>\n<p>Man, the Bay Area booklights a lot of us have known forever continue to go dim. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/cgi-bin\/article.cgi?f=\/c\/a\/2009\/06\/08\/DDT61807HH.DTL&#038;feed=rss.books\" target= _blank>Black Oak Books<\/a> is closing. That&#8217;s a real shocker, and the community is speechless &#8212; as there was no warning. Ugh. WHY do they keep doing that? Can&#8217;t they at least say, &#8220;Help!&#8221; so the community can rally &#8217;round? Aargh.<\/p>\n<p>On a happier note, though, I just discovered <a href=\"http:\/\/charlotteslibrary.blogspot.com\/2009\/06\/waiting-on-wednesday-conspiracy-of.html\" target= _blank>Charlotte&#8217;s post<\/a> which announces the new <a href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_gZW10xq-pDs\/SjBAt6yHsDI\/AAAAAAAAB74\/Yp7Lsbc4mTY\/s1600-h\/a\" target= _blank>Meghan Whalen Turner Attolia book, <i>A Conspiracy of Kings<\/i>!!!!<\/a> This makes life somewhat more worth living.<\/p>\n<p>And <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bookmoot.com\/2009\/06\/for-all-us-who-love-printed-word.html\" target= _blank>this little vimeo<\/a> on BookMoot&#8217;s blog is so me, it made me smile. Books really are where I <i>live<\/i>. Lately I haven&#8217;t been getting to read enough.
