Their melody pulled me step by step until I was crouched at the<br \/>\nbottom of the landing.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 17.0pt; text-align: justify; text-autospace: none; text-indent: 13.5pt; vertical-align: middle;\">\nThey were dancing.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 17.0pt; text-align: justify; text-autospace: none; text-indent: 13.5pt; vertical-align: middle;\">\nBrujas<br \/>\n and brujos were dressed in mourning white, their faces painted in the<br \/>\naspects of the dead, white clay and black coal to trace the bones. They<br \/>\ndanced in two circles\u2014-the outer ring going clockwise, the inner<br \/>\ncounterclockwise\u2014hands clasped tight, voices vibrating to the pulsing<br \/>\ndrums.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 17.0pt; text-align: justify; text-autospace: none; text-indent: 13.5pt; vertical-align: middle;\">\nAnd in the middle was Aunt Rosaria.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 17.0pt; text-align: justify; text-autospace: none; text-indent: 13.5pt; vertical-align: middle;\">\nHer<br \/>\n body jerked upward. It tugged Aunt Rosaria higher and<br \/>\nhigher, matching the rhythm of the canto.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 17.0pt; text-align: justify; text-autospace: none; text-indent: 13.5pt; vertical-align: middle;\">\nThen,<br \/>\n the black smoke perked up and changed its target. It could smell me. I<br \/>\ntried to backpedal, but the tiles were slick, and I slid toward the<br \/>\ncircle. My head smacked the tiles. Pain splintered my skull, and a<br \/>\nbroken scream lodged in my throat.<\/div>\n<div class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"line-height: 17.0pt; text-align: justify; text-autospace: none; text-indent: 13.5pt; vertical-align: middle;\">\nThe<br \/>\n music stopped. Heavy, tired breaths filled the silence of the pulsing<br \/>\nred dark. The enchantment was broken. Aunt Rosaria\u2019s reanimated corpse<br \/>\nturned to me. Her body purged black smoke, lowering her back to the<br \/>\nground. Her ankles cracked where the bone was brittle, but still she<br \/>\ntook a step. Her dead eyes gaped at me.
