It\u2019s a supply outpost, and the  kind of place where if you\u2019re not working for the good of the Company, you\u2019re not part of the Company. And if you\u2019re not part of the Company, you\u2019re from Earth. And Earthies have no business in the Black. Freedom Station is part of the Asteroid Belt, and that\u2019s Company territory. Nobody who ruined Earth is going to come up and ruin space, too. <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/lexicon.ci.anchorage.ak.us\/guides\/teens\/booklists\/spacer.jpg\" align=\"right\" hspace=\"10\" \/><\/p>\n<p>At least, that\u2019s what Jack thinks. He\u2019s always lived on Freedom Station, working and being cared for by the station \u2013 as long as he works, that is. He\u2019s got no family but his boss, but he knows Freedom, and he thinks he knows who belongs. Earthies visit, but they don\u2019t stay. Those who get dumped had better find a job. The other workers hunt down Rats \u2013 the kids who have been abandoned or run away to the Station \u2013 and they bring them down. There\u2019s no room on Freedom Station for anybody to just suck down resources and not give back. Jack\u2019s paid his dues, and he\u2019s about to move on, when he finds a Rat\u2026 with a droid\u2026 There are people who will pay big to find that droid, and Jack\u2019s in need of money.<\/p>\n<p>But Kit\u2019s not just a Rat, she\u2019s a girl\u2026 with a name\u2026 and a need. Jack&#8217;s conscience won&#8217;t let him leave her, so for now it&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.booksense.com\/product\/info.jsp?affiliateId=ReadersResponse&amp;isbn=9781596430587\" target=\"_blank\"> Spacer and Rat <\/a>, and everything about the universe is just the opposite of what Jack\u2019s been taught to believe.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Freedom Station.
