{"id":2589,"date":"2007-03-29T15:51:00","date_gmt":"2007-03-29T15:51:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/writingya.com\/?p=2589"},"modified":"2018-11-20T05:26:17","modified_gmt":"2018-11-20T05:26:17","slug":"writers-wanted-many-who-previously","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/writingya.com\/?p=2589","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.barnard.columbia.edu\/writers\/images\/booksetc4_08typewriter.jpg\" align=\"left\" hspace=\"10\" \/><b>WRITERS WANTED<\/b>: Many who previously wrote for such testing groups as McGraw-Hill CTB, but disliked signing away full writer&#8217;s rights might be interested in <a href=\"http:\/\/community.nlns.org\/writerswanted.html\" target=\"_blank\">New Leaders for New Schools<\/a>, a national non-profit organization (501(c)(3)), founded on solid belief in children, academic excellence and achievement. <i>New Leaders<\/i> is seeking writers who can write clearly for children age 7-14. The topic needed are myriad:<br \/><b>Realistic Fiction:<\/b>  Up to date, engaging dialogue, interesting plot line, interesting but age appropriate vocabulary, sensitivity to economic and social diversity.<br \/><b>Historical Fiction:<\/b>  Accurate details relating to the time period.<br \/>Fables:  The \u201clesson\u201d or moral can be explicitly stated or implied.  Often includes animals with human characteristics.<br \/>Folk Tales, Folk Lore, Legends, and Myths:  Engaging dialogue, interesting plot line, interesting but age appropriate vocabulary, clear connection to genre<br \/>Fairy Tales and Fantasy:  Engaging dialogue, interesting plot line, interesting but age appropriate vocabulary.<br \/>Rhyming Stories and Poetry:  Well thought out word choices.  Poems can be any style.<br \/>Non-Fiction Articles:  A variety of high-interest subjects that lead the reader to new understandings. Science, History, Social Studies, Memoirs.<br \/>Biographies:  Subjects who are not widely known and have made a significant contribution to society and include the historical and cultural context.<br \/>Speeches, Letters, and Other Genre:  These can be about a variety of subjects, both fiction and non-fiction.<br \/>Directions To Perform A Task:  Clear directions and purpose that children can relate to such as, how to condition a baseball glove, how to play a game popular in another country, how to make a craft.  Original recipes are also welcome.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/community.nlns.org\/writerswanted.html\" target=\"_blank\">New Leaders for New Schools<\/a> may not pay as much as testing companies, but keeping your rights and, especially for new writers, expanding that writer&#8217;s r\u00e9sum\u00e9 is a good thing &#8212; and you know more that you can share with kids than you think. Check out their writer&#8217;s guidelines and go for it.<\/p>\n<p><b>CALL FOR ILLUSTRATORS<\/b>: Via <a href=\"http:\/\/bookmoot.blogspot.com\/2007\/03\/roberts-snow-2007.html\" target=\"_blank\">Book Moot<\/a> comes the announcement that published children&#8217;s illustrators are being asked to participate in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.robertssnow.com\/content.php?page=story\" target=\"_blank\">Robert&#8217;s Snow<\/a> fund raiser. Even if you&#8217;re not an artist, there are ways <a href=\"http:\/\/www.robertssnow.com\/content.php?page=involved\" target=\"_blank\">you can participate.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><i>CALLING ALL YA READERS<\/i> <a href=\"http:\/\/awrungsponge.blogspot.com\/2007\/03\/what-would-you-suggest.html\" target=\"_blank\">A Wrung Sponge<\/a> is currently creating a MG book list comprised of NEW books with &#8220;diversity that is not stereotypical; we have enough of the pregnant basketball playing teenagers living in single parent families in the ghetto, thank you.&#8221; Thoughts? Head on over, s&#8217;il vous plait, et merci.<\/p>\n<p>Every year, Writer&#8217;s Digest has their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.writersdigest.com\/contests\/\" target=\"_blank\">Short Short Fiction<\/a> contest&#8230; well, I daresay this <a href=\"http:\/\/books.guardian.co.uk\/originalfiction\/story\/0,,2041548,00.html\" target=\"_blank\">six word contest<\/a> would give most of us a run for our money. Try it and see!<\/p>\n<p>Readers of high fantasy who enjoyed the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ceciliadartthornton.com\/faq_bitt.html\" target=\"_blank\"> Trilogy<\/a> will enjoy hearing what this quirky <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theaustralian.news.com.au\/story\/0,20867,21414896-5001986,00.html\" target=\"_blank\">Australian Author<\/a> is working on now. Incidentally, you might also enjoy this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.readersread.com\/features\/hilaribell.htm\" target=\"_blank\">author interview with Hilari Bell<\/a>, one of the most thoughtful fantasy writers for YA I&#8217;ve appreciated. If you haven&#8217;t read her <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfwa.org\/members\/bell\/\" target=\"_blank\">books<\/a>, check out a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.genrefluent.com\/youngadult.htm\" target=\"_blank\">review or two<\/a>, and then jump in.<\/p>\n<p>Much like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.publishersweekly.com\/blog\/660000266\/post\/1290007929.html\" target=\"_blank\">Shelf Talker&#8217;s Alison Morris<\/a>, I too am sort of going &#8220;meh&#8221; about the cover of the newest Potter book. Or maybe my &#8220;meh&#8221; could be translated as, &#8220;Yes, yes, let&#8217;s just get <i>ON<\/i> with it already.&#8221; Either way. Or, it could be that the whole thing just looks too much like somewhere <a href=\"http:\/\/dulemba.com\/2007\/03\/harry-potter-cover-revealed.html#comments\" target=\"_blank\">we&#8217;ve all seen before<\/a>!!! What IS IT with covers?
