{"id":2857,"date":"2006-09-05T18:03:00","date_gmt":"2006-09-05T18:03:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/writingya.com\/?p=2857"},"modified":"2018-11-20T05:25:42","modified_gmt":"2018-11-20T05:25:42","slug":"tuesday-is-new-monday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/writingya.com\/?p=2857","title":{"rendered":"Tuesday is the new Monday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So, after all the dust had settled from my breakneck last second edits, and the trip to the Post Office was over with, and I lay down on my tiny living room floor to just <em>breathe<\/em>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;the mail came.<\/p>\n<p>With another big, fat envelope from Secret Agent Man.<\/p>\n<p>I rolled over and got up and headed toward the mail, and was body checked by a large Being that pushed me back toward the couch and said, &#8220;<strong>Tuesday<\/strong>. <strong><em>NOT<\/em> today<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>That, and new jersey sheets on my bed, sounded just <em>too<\/em> sweetly reasonable. I am sizing up said envelope even now, knowing that work awaits. But! Thought I&#8217;d point out a few roses I had a chance to stop and smell this past weekend:<\/p>\n<p>Via <a href=\"http:\/\/jkrbooks.typepad.com\/blog\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jen Robinson&#8217;s<\/a> Book Page, a great article on adult readers of YA books by blogger <a href=\"http:\/\/daphne.blogs.com\/books\/2006\/09\/too_grown_up_fo.html#more\" target=\"_blank\">Daphne<\/a>, and a quick link to the book <a href=\"http:\/\/kimandjason.com\/shop\/product_info.php?ref=3&#038;products_id=542&amp;affiliate_banner_id=8\" target=\"_blank\">Escape Adulthood<\/a>, which seems to have been written for those of us who feel guilty for moving into the YA section of our local libraries. (Yes, Librarians, I know part of your job is to protect the kids, and more super power to you, but I promise, I just want a <i>book!<\/i> Stop staring at me!!)<\/p>\n<p>Trying to explain to others why you&#8217;re a writer and how they can become one? Don&#8217;t, suggests <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2006\/08\/31\/AR2006083101173.html?sub=AR\" target=\"_blank\">Laura Zigman<\/a> in this amusing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonPost.com\" target=\"_blank\">Washington Post Bookworld<\/a> article on the Writing Life.<\/p>\n<p>Via <a href=\"http:\/\/ozandends.blogspot.com\/2006\/09\/wrinkles-in-legend-of-wrinkle-in-time.html\" target=\"_blank\">Oz and Ends<\/a>, is it a story of persistence or of connections? <a href=\"http:\/\/www.msnbc.msn.com\/id\/4926262\/\" target=\"_blank\">Madeleine L&#8217;Engle<\/a> was published through a friend of her mother&#8217;s, after many rejections and after giving up entirely on her first novel for children. The fact that she was already a published author with an agent is rarely mentioned. It&#8217;s sometimes difficult for writers to attend conferences and hear about these instant success stories when they&#8217;ve been schlepping around a novel for ages, trying to get someone interested. It&#8217;s hard not to become discouraged &#8212; and frankly, jealous as heck &#8212; over someone else&#8217;s success and connections. The truth is, if it&#8217;s merely a matter of luck, it can happen to anyone&#8230; all you have to have is an excellent manuscript in hand&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>To that end, the story of the man who was paralyzed for thirty years and wrote a seafaring novel purely based on <a href=\"http:\/\/sfgate.com\/cgi-bin\/article.cgi?f=\/c\/a\/2006\/09\/05\/BAG0MKVASA1.DTL\" _target=\"blank\">memory and imagination<\/a> deserves a big <em>huzzah!<\/em> for his persistence. If he can do it&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.publishersweekly.com\/index.asp?layout=channelMore&#038;channel=breakingnewsmore\" target=\"_blank\">Publishers&#8217; Weekly<\/a> reminds us that the new Artemis Fowl goes on sale this week. And <a href=\"http:\/\/www.calendarlive.com\/books\/cl-fi-textbookads5sep05,0,258752.story?coll=cl-books\" target=\"_blank\">the L.A. Times<\/a> carried the <i>obnoxious<\/i> AP story of a Minnesota start-up called Freeload Press, Inc., which carries the full text of many college business courses and offers them to students to download and print for free &#8212; provided they don&#8217;t mind ADS coming with their TEXTBOOKS. Textbook prices, which have risen at twice the rate of inflation, have always been overpriced, but <em>ads? <\/em>First movie previews, then B.A.R.T. trains and now textbooks. Is<em> nowhere<\/em> immune from commercials!?<\/p>\n<p>Finally, I am <em>speechless<\/em> about <a href=\"http:\/\/today.reuters.com\/news\/articlenews.aspx?type=newsOne&#038;storyID=2006-09-04T053821Z_01_SP34161_RTRUKOC_0_US-AUSTRALIA-IRWIN.xml&amp;WTmodLoc=Home-C2-TopNews-newsOne-4\" target=\"_blank\">Steve Irwin<\/a>. Someone mentioned it casually to me yesterday, and I never let on that I didn&#8217;t already know&#8230; so much for my weekend of not connecting to the media. I don&#8217;t know why, but I really liked that big lunk, and so did so many little kids I know. No matter how much of a nutcase he may have seemed to have been, he knew his stuff, and I thought he would live forever somehow.
