Lest you feel sad that rummaging through <i>your<\/i> couch only produces stale chip crumbs, we assure you we&#8217;ve got plenty of chair-change to share &#8211; and social change, which is much preferable to the usual stuff found in the couch cushions.<\/p>\n<p>So&#8230;pretty much we&#8217;ve all heard of the #WeNeedDiverseBooks Twitter campaign. It trended from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/books\/jacketcopy\/la-et-jc-all-white-lineup-bookcon-diversity-backlash-20140502-story.html#axzz30aPMA9tF\" target= _blank>the LA Times<\/a> to The Guardian <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2014\/may\/01\/we-need-diverse-books-campaign-children\" target= _blank>in the UK<\/a> to the Huffington Post <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2014\/05\/02\/we-need-diverse-books_n_5253934.html\" target= _blank>and points in between<\/a>. It&#8217;s gotten people talking:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The School Library Journal <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slj.com\/2014\/05\/diversity\/everyday-diversity-a-teacher-librarian-offers-practical-tips-to-make-a-difference\/\" target= _blank>put together a helpful piece on<\/a> everyday diversity, which everyone can use,<\/li>\n<li>for Latin@s in Kidlit, blogger Patrick Flores-Scott wants <a href=\"http:\/\/latinosinkidlit.com\/2014\/05\/05\/make-the-weneeddiversebooks-campaign-a-movement-that-pushed-for-intentionality\/\" target= _blank>wants change to be &#8220;an ongoing Movement,<\/a>,&#8221; <\/li>\n<li>Author Nicole Brinkley talks <a href=\"http:\/\/www.yainterrobang.com\/2014\/05\/04\/weneeddiversebooks-wakes-up-ya-world\/\" target= _blank>about how seeing is believing &#8211; in oneself<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>The Cooperative Children&#8217;s Book Center questions the idea of &#8220;culturally generic&#8221; books &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/ccblogc.blogspot.com\/2014\/05\/culturally-genericneutral.html\" target= _blank>&#8230;generic from whose point of view?<\/a><\/li>\n<li>All Hail Princess Kavya! The panel will be moderated by 2015 debut author <b>I.W. Gregorio<\/b>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i>Huh.<\/i><br \/>\nThat last one was a little surprise.<br \/>\nTeen Librarian Toolbox speaks from the front lines of the &#8220;why we need diverse books&#8221; battle &#8211; Christie&#8217;s story &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.teenlibrariantoolbox.com\/2014\/04\/whats-in-name-diversity-and.html\" target= _blank>will give you a little headache, and hopefully from that, a lot of determination<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p> The world of children&#8217;s lit and all other literature continued to overlap for me last week Stephanie Saulter&#8217;s guest post on SF Signal: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfsignal.com\/archives\/2014\/05\/guest-post-special-needs-in-strange-worlds-we-need-fiction-to-tell-the-truth-by-stephanie-saulter\/?utm_source=feedburner&#038;utm_medium=feed&#038;utm_campaign=Feed:+Sfsignal+%28SFSignal%29\" target= _blank>Special Needs in Strange Worlds<\/a> was a stupendous piece, of which my favorite part was this: <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I don\u2019t want my characters to serve as symbols. I want them to feel like people. I want them to feel like you, and your family, and your friends, and your enemies. And I don\u2019t want them to feel real \u2018in spite of\u2019 their challenges. I want those challenges to be part of what makes them real.<\/p>\n<p>After all, they\u2019re part of what makes us real.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s the thing about fiction. It\u2019s one of the ways we understand the world. We tell ourselves stories to work out who we are, and to make sense of reality. Stories are incredibly powerful \u2013 and incredibly dangerous. By making things up you can tell the truth; or you can create, perpetuate and reinforce a lie. Simplistic, tokenistic \u2018uses\u2019 of disability in fiction \u2013 as though it\u2019s a thing to be \u2018used\u2019 and not an intrinsic facet of the human condition \u2013 are a way of not telling the truth. And by not telling ourselves the truth in our stories, we make it easier to avoid the truth in our daily lives.<\/p>\n<p>The truth is, every one of us is differently abled.
