{"id":621,"date":"2014-03-03T16:00:00","date_gmt":"2014-03-03T16:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/writingya.com\/?p=621"},"modified":"2018-11-20T05:39:27","modified_gmt":"2018-11-20T05:39:27","slug":"random-notes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/writingya.com\/?p=621","title":{"rendered":"Random Notes&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Though I&#8217;ve been, as I mentioned, completely snowed under (TOTALLY metaphorical, as I live in California, for which nobody on the other side of the country is going to feel sorry for me AT ALL) with work, I did run across a couple of interesting book-news items here and there around the Interwebs, so I thought I&#8217;d share those for your infotainment.<\/p>\n<p>Please to enjoy whilst I attempt to cling to the last shreds of sanity:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Firstly, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/2014\/02\/26\/282600453\/when-it-comes-to-womens-writing-how-do-publications-stack-up?sc=tw\" target=\"_blank\">VIDA count<\/a> came out again, the study that tracks gender disparity in books reviewed and in book reviewers themselves. While the news is still less than stellar, there was this: <i>&#8220;<i>The <\/i><\/i><i><\/i>[New York] Times <i>showed improvement in this year&#8217;s VIDA count: In<br \/>\n2013, the number of male and female book reviewers was almost equal, and<br \/>\n they reviewed 332 books written by women and 482 by men. [Pamela] Paul took over<br \/>\n as editor during that time, and she says diversifying the book review<br \/>\nsection was a priority for her.&#8221; <\/i>That is definitely something.<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>Have you checked out <a href=\"http:\/\/guyslitwire.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Guys Lit Wire<\/a> lately? We&#8217;ve got some new reviewers and a lot of great titles getting written about: among them, much to my excitement, is a new title by <a href=\"http:\/\/guyslitwire.blogspot.com\/2014\/02\/sidekicked-by-john-david-anderson.html\" target=\"_blank\">John David Anderson<\/a>, whose Cybils nominee <i>Standard Hero Behavior<\/i> was highly enjoyed around these parts. (Check out our <a href=\"http:\/\/writingya.blogspot.com\/2008\/11\/wbbt-day-four-john-david-anderson.html\" target=\"_blank\">WBBT interview with him here<\/a>!)<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li>What NOT to name your book? Try these: <i>Pie-ography: Where Pie Meets Biography. <\/i>Or, <i>Working Class Cats: The Bodega Cats of New York City. <\/i>STRANGE BUT TRUE. They&#8217;re both in the running for the Diagram Prize for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/blogs\/thetwo-way\/2014\/02\/21\/280641555\/book-news-years-oddest-title-pie-ography-working-class-cats-in-running?sc=tw\" target=\"_blank\">year&#8217;s oddest book title<\/a>, a contest that&#8217;s been around since 1978. Here&#8217;s another, from a past year&#8217;s contest: <i>Goblinproofing One&#8217;s Chicken Coop<\/i>.
