Impressively filthy. Impressively foul-tempered. Impressively unlikable. It takes a lot of courage for a writer to GO THERE, to make up a character her readers may not like &#8212; whom she herself may dislike &#8212; and then slowly but surely let her grow on them, like a particularly noxious mold. It worked.<\/p>\n<p>Ardalan is an impressively dark country. The prisons are grim, the slavery is more grim, and the King &#8211; oy. There is no magic. There is no light.
