Book Birthing Day

Opened up my email this morning, and the first thing I saw was a celebratory note from Jama at Alphabet Soup, whose soup of the day made me smile. An e-card full of anagrams — crazy ones, I wish you could see them — came from Little Willow. (And I agree, LW — Ultrasonic Tango could quite possibly be the coolest anagram of ‘congratulations’ ever!) Finally, I received notes from all the Poetry, who know what it means to have worked really hard, be neurotic about what you’ve come up with, but throw it out there anyway.

Yep, my first major published work, A LA CARTE, begins to be uncrated from cardboard to land on bookstore shelves, and my sincere thanks to everyone who has been so encouraging and supportive. You guys are amazing. Kirkus Reviews said, Davis’s debut offering is as delightful and fulfilling as the handwritten recipes-in-progress included at the end of each chapter. More importantly, my Mom said, “Oh, hon, that’s really cute.”

Really, it’s almost exactly what Kirkus said.
PS — Jackie, now I’ll *never* forget your birthday. Have a happy, you teapot loving, crossword doing, crazy person, you!

About the author

tanita s. davis is a writer and avid reader who prefers books to most things in the world, including people. That's ...pretty much it, she's very boring and she can't even tell jokes. She is, however, the author of nine books, including Serena Says, Partly Cloudy, Go Figure, Henri Weldon, and the Coretta Scott King honored Mare's War. Look for her new MG, The Science of Friendship in 1/2024 from Katherine Tegen Books.

  1. Congratulations Ms. T! I will run to my bookstore this weekend and make sure all of your copies are facing front. Everyone, call your bookstore and demand to know if they are carrying it. Guerrilla marketing at its best.

    Cheers!

  2. Yay! Congratulations! I’ll be stopping by a bookstore this weekend to pick up a copy to read on vacation! (and of course, I’ve already made my library order one too!)

  3. THANK YOU EVERYONE.
You guys are all so very supportive, and I appreciate each one of you so very much!

I’m pounding the pavement, meeting with indie booksellers this week, introducing myself and beaming at them (and begging them to carry my book). So far, it can only be ordered from Borders, but the five indies in Sonoma County that I checked with are carrying it. Yay!

Meanwhile, my editor has just sent contacted me to work on NEXT year’s release! Aargh! But in a good way.

  4. Hurrah hurrah! I just ordered your book from my favorite independent bookseller. Maybe we could email you envelopes for signed bookplates? Just a thought. (Clare Dunkle does that, as she lives in Germany most of the time.)

  5. Hey, Tanita! Just wanted to say that I loved the book. No time yet for a formal review – family obligations will be calling for a few days (and I’m not sure how formal it will be anyway, because I don’t feel 100% objective about the whole thing), but I wanted to tell you that I thought it was great. I loved the footnotes on the recipes. And I truly felt for Laine in her relationship with Sim – knowing that she deserved to be treated better by a friend, but still… Anyway, it’s a great book! Everyone should read it.
